Ionizing (or ionising in British English) radiation is radiation that carries enough energy to liberate electrons from atoms or molecules, thereby ionizing them. Ionizing radiation is composed of energetic subatomic particles, ions or atoms moving at relativistic speeds, and electromagnetic waves on the high-energy end of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Gamma rays, X-rays, and the higher ultraviolet part of the electromagnetic spectrum are ionizing, whereas the lower ultraviolet part of the electromagnetic spectrum, visible light (including nearly all types of laser light), infrared, microwaves, and radio waves are considered non-ionizing radiation. The boundary between ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation that occurs in the ultraviolet is not sharply defined, since different molecules and atoms ionize at different energies. Conventional definition places the boundary at a photon energy between 10 eV and 33 eV in the ultraviolet.

Typical ionizing subatomic particles from radioactivity include alpha particles, beta particles and neutrons. Almost all products of radioactive decay are ionizing because the energy of radioactive decay is typically far higher than that required to ionize. Other subatomic ionizing particles which occur naturally are muons, mesons, positrons, neutrons and other particles that constitute the secondary cosmic rays that are produced after primary cosmic rays interact with Earth’s atmosphere.^[1][2] Cosmic rays may also produce radioisotopes on Earth (for example, carbon-14), which in turn decay and produce ionizing radiation.

Cosmic rays and the decay of radioactive isotopes are the primary sources of natural ionizing radiation on Earth referred to as background radiation.

In space, natural thermal radiation emissions from matter at extremely high temperatures (e.g. plasma discharge or the corona of the Sun) may be ionizing. Ionizing radiation may be produced naturally by the acceleration of charged particles by natural electromagnetic fields (e.g. lightning), although this is rare on Earth. Natural supernova explosions in space produce a great deal of ionizing radiation near the explosion, which can be seen by its effects in the glowing nebulae associated with them.

Ionizing radiation can also be generated artificially using X-ray tubes, particle accelerators, and any of the various methods that produce radioisotopes artificially.

Ionizing radiation is invisible and not directly detectable by human senses, so radiation detection instruments such as Geiger counters are required. However, ionizing radiation may lead to secondary emission of visible light upon interaction with matter, such as in Cherenkov radiation and radioluminescence.

Ionizing radiation is applied constructively in a wide variety of fields such as medicine, research, manufacturing, construction, and many other areas, but presents a health hazard if proper measures against undesired exposure aren’t followed. Exposure to ionizing radiation causes damage to living tissue, and can result in mutation, radiation sickness, cancer, and death.

Types of ionizing radiation

Ionizing radiation is categorized by the nature of the particles or electromagnetic waves that create the ionizing effect. These have different ionization mechanisms, and may be grouped as directly or indirectly ionizing.

Directly ionizing

Any charged massive particle can ionize atoms directly by fundamental interaction through the Coulomb force if it carries sufficient kinetic energy. This includes atomic nuclei, electrons, muons, charged pions, protons, and energetic charged nuclei stripped of their electrons, all of which must be moving at relativistic speeds to reach the required kinetic energy. The first two ionizing sources to be recognized were given special names used today: Helium nuclei at relativistic speeds are called alpha particles, and electrons at relativistic speeds are called beta particles. Natural cosmic rays are made up primarily of relativistic protons but also include heavier atomic nuclei like helium ions and HZE ions and muons. Charged pions are very short-lived and seen only in large amounts in particle accelerators.

Alpha particles

Alpha particles consist of two protons and two neutrons bound together into a particle identical to a helium nucleus. Alpha particle emissions are generally produced in the process of alpha decay, but may also be produced in other ways. Alpha particles are named after the first letter in the Greek alphabet, α. The symbol for the alpha particle is α or α²⁺. Because they are identical to helium nuclei, they are also sometimes written as He2+
or 4
2He2+
indicating a Helium ion with a +2 charge (missing its two electrons). If the ion gains electrons from its environment, the alpha particle can be written as a normal (electrically neutral) helium atom 4
2He.

Alpha particles are a highly ionizing form of particle radiation, and when they result from radioactive alpha decay they have low penetration depth. They can be stopped by a few centimeters of air, or by the skin. More powerful, long range alpha particles from ternary fission are three times as energetic, and penetrate as far. The helium nuclei, that form 10-12% of cosmic rays, are also usually of much higher energy than those produced by nuclear decay processes, and are thus able to traverse the human body and dense shielding.

Beta particles

Beta particles are high-energy, high-speed electrons or positrons emitted by certain types of radioactive nuclei, such as potassium-40. The production of beta particles is termed beta decay. They are designated by the Greek letter beta (β). There are two forms of beta decay, β⁻ and β⁺, which respectively give rise to the electron and the positron.^[3]

When something is said to have radioactive contamination, it often means that there are beta particles being emitted from its surface, detectable with a Geiger counter or other radiation detector. When brought into proximity to the beta emitter, the detector will indicate a dramatic increase in radioactivity. When the detector probe is covered with a shield to block the beta rays, the indication will be reduced dramatically.

High-energy beta particles may produce X-rays known as bremsstrahlung (“braking radiation”) or secondary electrons (delta ray)as they pass through matter. Both of these can cause an indirect ionization effect.

Bremsstrahlung is of concern when shielding beta emitters, as the interaction of beta particles with the shielding material produces Bremsstrahlung radiation. This effect is greater with material of high atomic numbers, so material with low atomic numbers is used for beta source shielding.

Positrons and other types of antimatter

The positron or antielectron is the antiparticle or the antimatter counterpart of the electron. When a low-energy positron collides with a low-energy electron, annihilation occurs, resulting in the their conversion into the energy of two or more gamma ray photons (see electron–positron annihilation).

Positrons may be generated by positron emission nuclear decay (through weak interactions), or by pair production from a sufficiently energetic photon. Positrons are common artificial sources of ionizing radiation used in medical positron emission tomography (PET) scans.

As positrons are positively charged particles they can also directly ionize an atom through Coulomb interactions.

Photon radiation

Even though photons are electrically neutral, they can ionize atoms directly through the photoelectric effect and the Compton effect. Either of those interactions will cause the ejection of an electron from an atom at relativistic speeds, turning that electron into a beta particle (secondary beta particle) that will ionize many other atoms. Since most of the affected atoms are ionized directly by the secondary beta particles, photons are called indirectly ionizing radiation.^[4]

Photon radiation is called gamma rays if produced by a nuclear reaction, subatomic particle decay, or radioactive decay within the nucleus. It is otherwise called x-rays if produced outside the nucleus. The generic term photon is therefore used to describe both.^[5][6][7]

X-rays normally have a lower energy than gamma rays, and an older convention was to define the boundary as a wavelength of 10⁻¹¹ m or a photon energy of 100 keV.^[8] That threshold was driven by limitations of older X-ray tubes and low awareness of isomeric transitions. Modern technologies and discoveries have resulted in an overlap between X-ray and gamma energies. In many fields they are functionally identical, differing for terrestrial studies only in origin of the radiation. In astronomy, however, where radiation origin often cannot be reliably determined, the old energy division has been preserved, with X-rays defined as being between about 120 eV and 120 keV, and gamma rays as being of any energy above 100 to 120 keV, regardless of source. Most astronomical “gamma-ray astronomy” are known not to originate in nuclear radioactive processes but, rather, result from processes like those that produce astronomical X-rays, except driven by much more energetic electrons.

Photoelectric absorption is the dominant mechanism in organic materials for photon energies below 100 keV, typical of classical X-ray tube originated X-rays. At energies beyond 100 keV, photons ionize matter increasingly through the Compton effect, and then indirectly through pair production at energies beyond 5 MeV. The accompanying interaction diagram shows two Compton scatterings happening sequentially. In every scattering event, the gamma ray transfers energy to an electron, and it continues on its path in a different direction and with reduced energy.

Definition boundary for lower-energy photons

US Federal Communications Commission material defines ionizing radiation as that with a photon energy of greater than 10 eV (equivalent to a far ultraviolet wavelength of 124 nanometers).^[9] Roughly, this corresponds to both the first ionization energy of oxygen, and the ionization energy of hydrogen, both about 14 eV ^[10] In some Environmental Protection Agency references, the ionization of a typical water molecule at an energy of 33 eV is referenced ^[11] as the appropriate biological threshold for ionizing radiation: this value represents the so-called W-value, the colloquial name for the ICRU‘s mean energy expended in a gas per ion pair formed,^[12] which combines ionization energy plus the energy lost to other processes such as excitation.^[13] At 38 nanometers wavelength for electromagnetic radiation, 33 eV is close to the energy at the conventional 10 nm wavelength transition between extreme ultraviolet, and X-ray radiation, which occurs at about 125 eV. Thus, X-ray radiation is always ionizing, but only extreme-ultraviolet radiation can be considered ionizing under all definitions.

As noted, the biological effect of ionizing radiation on cells somewhat resembles that of a broader spectrum of molecularly-damaging radiation, which overlaps ionizing radiation and extends beyond, to somewhat lower energies into all regions of UV and sometimes visible light in some systems (such as photosynthetic systems in leaves). Although DNA is always susceptible to damage by ionizing radiation, the DNA molecule may also be damaged by radiation with enough energy to excite certain molecular bonds to form thymine dimers. This energy may be less than ionizing, but near to it. A good example is ultraviolet spectrum energy which begins at about 3.1 eV (400 nm) at close to the same energy level which can cause sunburn to unprotected skin, as a result of photoreactions in collagen and (in the UV-B range) also damage in DNA (for example, pyrimidine dimers). Thus, the mid and lower ultraviolet electromagnetic spectrum is damaging to biological tissues as a result of electronic excitation in molecules which falls short of ionization, but produces similar non-thermal effects. To some extent, visible light and also ultraviolet A (UVA) which is closest to visible energies, have been proven to result in formation of reactive oxygen species in skin, which cause indirect damage since these are electronically excited molecules which can inflict reactive damage, although they do not cause sunburn (erythema).^[14] Like ionization-damage, all these effects in skin are beyond those produced by simple thermal effects.

Charged nuclei

Charged nuclei are characteristic of galactic cosmic rays and solar particle events and have no natural sources on the earth. In space, however, very high energy protons, helium nuclei, and HZE ions can be initially stopped by relatively thin layers of shielding, clothes, or skin. However, the resulting interaction will generate secondary radiation and cause cascading biological effects. If just one atom of tissue is displaced by an energetic proton, for example, the collision will cause further interactions in the body. This is called “linear energy transfer” (LET), which utilizes elastic scattering.

LET can be visualized as a billiard ball hitting another in the manner of the conservation of momentum, sending both away with the energy of the first ball divided between the two unequally. When a charged nucleus strikes a relatively slow-moving nucleus of an object in space, LET occurs and neutrons, alpha particles, low-energy protons, and other nuclei will be released by the collisions and contribute to the total absorbed dose of tissue.^[15]

Indirectly ionizing

Indirect ionizing radiation is electrically neutral and therefore does not interact strongly with matter. The bulk of the ionization effects are due to secondary ionizations.

An example of indirectly ionizing radiation is neutron radiation.

Neutrons

Neutrons have zero electrical charge and thus often do not directly cause ionization in a single step or interaction with matter. However, fast neutrons will interact with the protons in hydrogen via LET, and this mechanism scatters the nuclei of the materials in the target area, causing direct ionization of the hydrogen atoms. When neutrons strike the hydrogen nuclei, proton radiation (fast protons) results. These protons are themselves ionizing because they are of high energy, are charged, and interact with the electrons in matter.

Neutrons that strike other nuclei besides hydrogen will transfer less energy to the other particle if LET does occur. But, for many nuclei struck by neutrons, inelastic scattering occurs. Whether elastic or inelastic scatter occurs is dependent on the speed of the neutron, whether fast or thermal or somewhere in between. It is also dependent on the nuclei it strikes and its neutron cross section.

In inelastic scattering, neutrons are readily absorbed in a process called neutron capture and attributes to the neutron activation of the nucleus. Neutron interactions with most types of matter in this manner usually produce radioactive nuclei. The abundant oxygen-16 nucleus, for example, undergoes neutron activation, rapidly decays by a proton emission forming nitrogen-16, which decays to oxygen-16. The short-lived nitrogen-16 decay emits a powerful beta ray. This process can be written as:

₁₆N → ₁₆O + β⁻ (Decay t_1/2 = 7.13 s)

This high-energy β⁻ further interacts rapidly with other nuclei, emitting high-energy γ via Bremsstrahlung

While not a favorable reaction, the ₁₆O (n,p) ₁₆N reaction is a major source of X-rays emitted from the cooling water of a pressurized water reactor and contributes enormously to the radiation generated by a water-cooled nuclear reactor while operating.

For the best shielding of neutrons, hydrocarbons that have an abundance of hydrogen are used.

In fissile materials, secondary neutrons may produce nuclear chain reactions, causing a larger amount of ionization from the daughter products of fission.

Outside the nucleus, free neutrons are unstable and have a mean lifetime of 14 minutes, 42 seconds. Free neutrons decay by emission of an electron and an electron antineutrino to become a proton, a process known as beta decay:^[16]

In the diagram to the right, a neutron collides with a proton of the target material, and then becomes a fast recoil proton that ionizes in turn. At the end of its path, the neutron is captured by a nucleus in an (n,γ)-reaction that leads to the emission of a neutron capture photon. Such photons always have enough energy to qualify as ionizing radiation.

Physical effects

Nuclear effects

Neutron radiation, alpha radiation, and extremely energetic gamma (> ~20 MeV) can cause nuclear transmutation and induced radioactivity. The relevant mechanisms are neutron activation, alpha absorption, and photodisintegration. A large enough number of transmutations can change macroscopic properties and cause targets to become radioactive themselves, even after the original source is removed.

Chemical effects

Ionization of molecules can lead to radiolysis (breaking chemical bonds), and formation of highly reactive free radicals. These free radicals may then react chemically with neighbouring materials even after the original radiation has stopped. (e.g., ozone cracking of polymers by ozone formed by ionization of air). Ionizing radiation can disrupt crystal lattices in metals, causing them to become amorphous, with consequent swelling, material creep, and embrittlement. Ionizing radiation can also accelerate existing chemical reactions such as polymerization and corrosion, by contributing to the activation energy required for the reaction. Optical materials darken under the effect of ionizing radiation.

High-intensity ionizing radiation in air can produce a visible ionized air glow of telltale bluish-purplish color. The glow can be observed, e.g., during criticality accidents, around mushroom clouds shortly after a nuclear explosion, or inside of a damaged nuclear reactor like during the Chernobyl disaster.

Monatomic fluids, e.g. molten sodium, have no chemical bonds to break and no crystal lattice to disturb, so they are immune to the chemical effects of ionizing radiation. Simple diatomic compounds with very negative enthalpy of formation, such as hydrogen fluoride will reform rapidly and spontaneously after ionization.

Electrical effects

Ionization of materials temporarily increases their conductivity, potentially permitting damaging current levels. This is a particular hazard in semiconductor microelectronics employed in electronic equipment, with subsequent currents introducing operation errors or even permanently damaging the devices. Devices intended for high radiation environments such as the nuclear industry and extra atmospheric (space) applications may be made radiation hard to resist such effects through design, material selection, and fabrication methods.

Proton radiation found in space can also cause single-event upsets in digital circuits.

The electrical effects of ionizing radiation are exploited in gas-filled radiation detectors, e.g. the Geiger-Muller counter or the ion chamber.

Health effects

In general, ionizing radiation is harmful and potentially lethal to living beings but can have health benefits in radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer and thyrotoxicosis.

Most adverse health effects of radiation exposure may be grouped in two general categories:

• deterministic effects (harmful tissue reactions) due in large part to the killing/ malfunction of cells following high doses; and
• stochastic effects, i.e., cancer and heritable effects involving either cancer development in exposed individuals owing to mutation of somatic cells or heritable disease in their offspring owing to mutation of reproductive (germ) cells.^[17]

Its most common impact is the stochastic induction of cancer with a latent period of years or decades after exposure. The mechanism by which this occurs is well understood, but quantitative models predicting the level of risk remain controversial. The most widely accepted model posits that the incidence of cancers due to ionizing radiation increases linearly with effective radiation dose at a rate of 5.5% per sievert.^[18] If this linear model is correct, then natural background radiation is the most hazardous source of radiation to general public health, followed by medical imaging as a close second. Other stochastic effects of ionizing radiation are teratogenesis, cognitive decline, and heart disease.

High radiation dose gives rise to Deterministic effects which reliably occur above a threshold, and their severity increases with dose. Deterministic effects are not necessarily more or less serious than stochastic effects; either can ultimately lead to a temporary nuisance or a fatality. Examples are: radiation burns, and/or rapid fatality through acute radiation syndrome, chronic radiation syndrome, and radiation-induced thyroiditis.

Beneficially, controlled doses are used for medical imaging and radiotherapy, and some scientists suspect that low doses may have a mild hormetic effect that can improve health,^[19] but the US National Academy of Sciences Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation Committee “has concluded that there is no compelling evidence to indicate a dose threshold below which the risk of tumor induction is zero”^[20]

When alpha particle emitting isotopes are ingested, they are far more dangerous than their half-life or decay rate would suggest. This is due to the high relative biological effectiveness of alpha radiation to cause biological damage after alpha-emitting radioisotopes enter living cells. Ingested alpha emitter radioisotopes such as transuranics or actinides are an average of about 20 times more dangerous, and in some experiments up to 1000 times more dangerous than an equivalent activity of beta emitting or gamma emitting radioisotopes.

The human body cannot sense ionizing radiation except in very high doses, but the effects of ionization can be used to characterize the radiation. Parameters of interest include disintegration rate, particle flux, particle type, beam energy, kerma, dose rate, and radiation dose.

If the radiation type is not known then it can be determined by differential measurements in the presence of electrical fields, magnetic fields, or varying amounts of shielding.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection manages the International System of Radiological Protection, which sets recommended limits for dose uptake. Dose values may represent absorbed, equivalent, effective, or committed dose. The monitoring and calculation of doses to safeguard human health is called dosimetry and is undertaken within the science of health physics. Key measurement tools are the use of dosimeters to give the external effective dose uptake and the use of bio-assay for ingested dose. The article on the sievert summarises the recommendations of the ICRU and ICRP on the use of dose quantities and includes a guide to the effects of ionizing radiation as measured in sieverts, and gives examples of approximate figures of dose uptake in certain situations.

The committed dose is a measure of the stochastic health risk due to an intake of radioactive material into the human body. The ICRP states “For internal exposure, committed effective doses are generally determined from an assessment of the intakes of radionuclides from bioassay measurements or other quantities. The radiation dose is determined from the intake using recommended dose coefficients”.^[21]

Measurement

The table below shows radiation and dose quantities in SI and non-SI units. The relationships of the ICRP dose quantities are shown in the accompanying diagram.

Uses

Ionizing radiation has many industrial, military, and medical uses. Its usefulness must be balanced with its hazards, a compromise that has shifted over time. For example, at one time, assistants in shoe shops used X-rays to check a child’s shoe size, but this practice was halted when the risks of ionizing radiation were better understood.^[22]

Neutron radiation is essential to the working of nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons. The penetrating power of x-ray, gamma, beta, and positron radiation is used for medical imaging, nondestructive testing, and a variety of industrial gauges. Radioactive tracers are used in medical and industrial applications, as well as biological and radiation chemistry. Alpha radiation is used in static eliminators and smoke detectors. The sterilizing effects of ionizing radiation are useful for cleaning medical instruments, food irradiation, and the sterile insect technique. Measurements of carbon-14, can be used to date the remains of long-dead organisms (such as wood that is thousands of years old).

Sources of radiation

Ionizing radiation is generated through nuclear reactions, nuclear decay, by very high temperature, or via acceleration of charged particles in electromagnetic fields. Natural sources include the sun, lightning and supernova explosions. Artificial sources include nuclear reactors, particle accelerators, and x-ray tubes.

The International Commission on Radiological Protection manages the International System of Radiological Protection, which sets recommended limits for dose uptake.

Background radiation

Background radiation comes from both natural and man-made sources.

The global average exposure of humans to ionizing radiation is about 3 mSv (0.3 rem) per year, 80% of which comes from nature. The remaining 20% results from exposure to man-made radiation sources, primarily from medical imaging. Average man-made exposure is much higher in developed countries, mostly due to CT scans and nuclear medicine.

Natural background radiation comes from five primary sources: cosmic radiation, solar radiation, external terrestrial sources, radiation in the human body, and radon.

The background rate for natural radiation varies considerably with location, being as low as 1.5 mSv/a (1.5 mSv per year) in some areas and over 100 mSv/a in others. The highest level of purely natural radiation recorded on the Earth’s surface is 90 µGy/h (0.8 Gy/a) on a Brazilian black beach composed of monazite.^[23] The highest background radiation in an inhabited area is found in Ramsar, primarily due to naturally radioactive limestone used as a building material. Some 2000 of the most exposed residents receive an average radiation dose of 10 mGy per year, (1 rad/yr) ten times more than the ICRP recommended limit for exposure to the public from artificial sources.^[24] Record levels were found in a house where the effective radiation dose due to external radiation was 135 mSv/a, (13.5 rem/yr) and the committed dose from radon was 640 mSv/a (64.0 rem/yr).^[25] This unique case is over 200 times higher than the world average background radiation.

Cosmic radiation

The Earth, and all living things on it, are constantly bombarded by radiation from outside our solar system. This cosmic radiation consists of relativistic particles: positively-charged nuclei (ions) from 1 amu protons (about 85% of it) to 26 amu iron nuclei and even beyond. (The high-atomic number particles are called HZE ions.) The energy of this radiation can far exceed that which humans can create, even in the largest particle accelerators (see ultra-high-energy cosmic ray). This radiation interacts in the atmosphere to create secondary radiation that rains down, including x-rays, muons, protons, antiprotons, alpha particles, pions, electrons, positrons, and neutrons.

The dose from cosmic radiation is largely from muons, neutrons, and electrons, with a dose rate that varies in different parts of the world and based largely on the geomagnetic field, altitude, and solar cycle. The cosmic-radiation dose rate on airplanes is so high that, according to the United Nations UNSCEAR 2000 Report (see links at bottom), airline flight crew workers receive more dose on average than any other worker, including those in nuclear power plants. Airline crews receive more cosmic rays if they routinely work flight routes that take them close to the North or South pole at high altitudes, where this type of radiation is maximal.

Cosmic rays also include high-energy gamma rays, which are far beyond the energies produced by solar or human sources.

External terrestrial sources

Most materials on Earth contain some radioactive atoms, even if in small quantities. Most of the dose received from these sources is from gamma-ray emitters in building materials, or rocks and soil when outside. The major radionuclides of concern for terrestrial radiation are isotopes of potassium, uranium, and thorium. Each of these sources has been decreasing in activity since the formation of the Earth.

Internal radiation sources

All earthly materials that are the building-blocks of life contain a radioactive component. As humans, plants, and animals consume food, air, and water, an inventory of radioisotopes builds up within the organism (see banana equivalent dose). Some radionuclides, like potassium-40, emit a high-energy gamma ray that can be measured by sensitive electronic radiation measurement systems. These internal radiation sources contribute to an individual’s total radiation dose from natural background radiation.

Radon

An important source of natural radiation is radon gas, which seeps continuously from bedrock but can, because of its high density, accumulate in poorly ventilated houses.

Radon-222 is a gas produced by the decay of radium-226. Both are a part of the natural uranium decay chain. Uranium is found in soil throughout the world in varying concentrations. Among non-smokers, radon is the largest cause of lung cancer and, overall, the second-leading cause.^[26]

Radiation exposure

There are three standard ways to limit exposure:

1. Time: For people exposed to radiation in addition to natural background radiation, limiting or minimizing the exposure time will reduce the dose from the radiation source.
2. Distance: Radiation intensity decreases sharply with distance, according to an inverse-square law (in an absolute vacuum).^[27]
3. Shielding: Air or skin can be sufficient to substantially attenuate low-energy alpha and beta radiation. Barriers of lead, concrete, or water give effective protection from more energetic particles such as gamma rays and neutrons. Some radioactive materials are stored or handled underwater or by remote control in rooms constructed of thick concrete or lined with lead. There are special plastic shields that stop beta particles, and air will stop most alpha particles. The effectiveness of a material in shielding radiation is determined by its half-value thicknesses, the thickness of material that reduces the radiation by half. This value is a function of the material itself and of the type and energy of ionizing radiation. Some generally accepted thicknesses of attenuating material are 5 mm of aluminum for most beta particles, and 3 inches of lead for gamma radiation.

These can all be applied to natural and man-made sources. For man-made sources the use of Containment is a major tool in reducing dose uptake and is effectively a combination of shielding and isolation from the open environment. Radioactive materials are confined in the smallest possible space and kept out of the environment such as in a hot cell (for radiation) or glove box (for contamination). Radioactive isotopes for medical use, for example, are dispensed in closed handling facilities, usually gloveboxes, while nuclear reactors operate within closed systems with multiple barriers that keep the radioactive materials contained. Work rooms, hot cells and gloveboxes have slightly reduced air pressures to prevent escape of airborne material to the open environment.

In nuclear conflicts or civil nuclear releases civil defense measures can help reduce exposure of populations by reducing ingestion of isotopes and occupational exposure . One is the issue of potassium iodide (KI) tablets, which blocks the uptake of radioactive iodine (one of the major radioisotope products of nuclear fission) into the human thyroid gland.

Occupational exposure

Occupationally exposed individuals are controlled within the regulatory framework of the country they work in, and in accordance with any local nuclear licence constraints. These are usually based on the recommendations of the ICRP. The International Commission on Radiological Protection recommends limiting artificial irradiation. For occupational exposure, the limit is 50 mSv in a single year with a maximum of 100 mSv in a consecutive five-year period.^[28]

The radiation exposure of these individuals is carefully monitored with the use of dosimeters and other radiological protection instruments which will measure radioactive particulate concentrations, area gamma dose readings and radioactive contamination. A legal record of dose is kept.

Examples of activities where occupational exposure is a concern include:

• Airline crew (the most exposed population)
• Industrial radiography
• Medical radiology and nuclear medicine^[29][30]
• Uranium mining
• Nuclear power plant and nuclear fuel reprocessing plant workers
• Research laboratories (government, university and private)

Some human-made radiation sources affect the body through direct radiation, known as effective dose (radiation) while others take the form of radioactive contamination and irradiate the body from within. This latter is known as committed dose

Public exposure

Medical procedures, such as diagnostic X-rays, nuclear medicine, and radiation therapy are by far the most significant source of human-made radiation exposure to the general public. Some of the major radionuclides used are I-131, Tc-99, Co-60, Ir-192, and Cs-137. The public also is exposed to radiation from consumer products, such as tobacco (polonium-210), combustible fuels (gas, coal, etc.), televisions, luminous watches and dials (tritium), airport X-ray systems, smoke detectors (americium), electron tubes, and gas lantern mantles (thorium).

Of lesser magnitude, members of the public are exposed to radiation from the nuclear fuel cycle, which includes the entire sequence from processing uranium to the disposal of the spent fuel. The effects of such exposure have not been reliably measured due to the extremely low doses involved. Opponents use a cancer per dose model to assert that such activities cause several hundred cases of cancer per year, an application of the widely accepted Linear no-threshold model (LNT).

The International Commission on Radiological Protection recommends limiting artificial irradiation to the public to an average of 1 mSv (0.001 Sv) of effective dose per year, not including medical and occupational exposures.^[28]

In a nuclear war, gamma rays from both the initial weapon explosion and fallout would be the sources of radiation exposure.

Spaceflight

Massive particles are a concern for astronauts outside the earth’s magnetic field who would receive solar particles from solar proton events (SPE) and galactic cosmic rays from cosmic sources. These high-energy charged nuclei are blocked by Earth’s magnetic field but pose a major health concern for astronauts traveling to the moon and to any distant location beyond the earth orbit. Highly charged HZE ions in particular are known to be extremely damaging, although protons make up the vast majority of galactic cosmic rays. Evidence indicates past SPE radiation levels that would have been lethal for unprotected astronauts.^[31]

Air travel

Air travel exposes people on aircraft to increased radiation from space as compared to sea level, including cosmic rays and from solar flare events.^[32] Software programs such as Epcard, CARI, SIEVERT, PCAIRE are attempts to simulate exposure by aircrews and passengers.^[32] An example of a measured dose (not simulated dose) is 6 μSv per hour from London Heathrow to Tokyo Narita on a high-latitude polar route.^[32] However, dosages can vary, such as during periods of high solar activity.^[32] The United States FAA requires airlines to provide flight crew with information about cosmic radiation, and an International Commission on Radiological Protection recommendation for the general public is no more than 1 mSv per year.^[32] In addition, many airlines do not allow pregnant flightcrew members, to comply with a European Directive.^[32] The FAA has a recommended limit of 1 mSv total for a pregnancy, and no more than 0.5 mSv per month.^[32] Information originally based on Fundamentals of Aerospace Medicine published in 2008.^[32]

Today, 16 April 2015, WikiLeaks publishes an analysis and search system for The Sony Archives: 30,287 documents from Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and 173,132 emails, to and from more than 2,200 SPE email addresses. SPE is a US subsidiary of the Japanese multinational technology and media corporation Sony, handling their film and TV production and distribution operations. It is a multi-billion dollar US business running many popular networks, TV shows and film franchises such as Spider-Man, Men in Black and Resident Evil.

In November 2014 the White House alleged that North Korea’s intelligence services had obtained and distributed a version of the archive in revenge for SPE’s pending release of The Interview, a film depicting a future overthrow of the North Korean government and the assassination of its leader, Kim Jong-un. Whilst some stories came out at the time, the original archives, which were not searchable, were removed before the public and journalists were able to do more than scratch the surface.

Now published in a fully searchable format The Sony Archives offer a rare insight into the inner workings of a large, secretive multinational corporation. The work publicly known from Sony is to produce entertainment; however, The Sony Archives show that behind the scenes this is an influential corporation, with ties to the White House (there are almost 100 US government email addresses in the archive), with an ability to impact laws and policies, and with connections to the US military-industrial complex.

WikiLeaks editor-in-chief Julian Assange said: “This archive shows the inner workings of an influential multinational corporation. It is newsworthy and at the centre of a geo-political conflict. It belongs in the public domain. WikiLeaks will ensure it stays there.”

Sony is a member of the MPAA and a strong lobbyist on issues around internet policy, piracy, trade agreements and copyright issues. The emails show the back and forth on lobbying and political efforts, not only with the MPAA but with politicians directly. In November 2013 WikiLeaks published a secret draft of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) IP Chapter. The Sony Archives show SPE’s internal reactions, including discussing the impact with Michael Froman, the US Trade Representative. It also references the case against Megaupload and the extradition of its founder Kim DotCom from New Zealand as part of SPE’s war on piracy.

The connections and alignments between Sony Pictures Entertainment and the US Democratic Party are detailed through the archives, including SPE’s CEO Lynton attending dinner with President Obama at Martha’s Vineyard and Sony employees being part of fundraising dinners for the Democratic Party. There are emails setting up a collective within the corporation to get around the 5,000 USD limit on corporate campaign donations to give 50,000 USD to get the Democratic New York Governor Andrew Cuomo elected as “Thanks to Governor Cuomo, we have a great production incentive environment in NY and a strong piracy advocate that’s actually done more than talk about our problems.”

Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton is on the board of trustees of RAND Corporation, an organisation specialising in research and development for the United States military and intelligence sector. The Sony Archives show the flow of contacts and information between these two major US industries, whether it is RAND wanting to invite George Clooney and Kevin Spacey to events, or Lynton offering contact to Valerie Jarrett (a close advisor to Obama) or RAND desiring a partnership with IMAX for digital archiving. With this close tie to the military-industrial complex it is no surprise that Sony reached out to RAND for advice regarding its North Korea film The Interview. RAND provided an analyst specialised in North Korea and suggested Sony reach out to the State Department and the NSA regarding North Korea’s complaints about the upcoming film. The Sony documents also show Sony being in possession of a brochure for an NSA-evaluated online cloud security set-up called INTEGRITY.

The archives also detail SPE’s development of its own films and collecting “intelligence” on rival pictures, for example documents in the archive reveal the budget breakdown for Oliver Stone’s rival picture Snowden, which is currently in production. The budget reveals the rights spend: 700,000 USD to the Guardian‘s Luke Harding, 600,000 USD to Oliver Stone for his work on the script and 1,000,000 USD to Snowden’s Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena.

Jag riktar i första hand min uppmärksamhet till Dig som medmänniska, men även till Dig som riksdagsledamot [inte längre/min anmärkn.] och representant för det ENDA svenska demokratiska partiet som värnar om mänskliga rättigheter och den enskilda individen.
Jag ämnar ta upp det mycket hemligstämplade vädermanipuleringsprojektet “Project Cloverleaf”(USA) och “Combine EU” (Europa), Geoengineering (vädermanipulering), som jag antar att Ni är väl medvetna om och att det var dåvarande statsminister Göran Persson som år 2001, i all hemlighet, BAKOM SVENSKA FOLKETS RYGGAR, undertecknade en överenskommelse med USA:s regering att även Sverige skulle deltaga i det globala vädermanipuleringsprojektet, som sades skulle “hantera” den globala uppvärmningen.
År 2007 ingick ju även Sverige ett annat hemligt avtal med USA och det var att Sverige skulle “smygingå” i NATO och samarbeta med den amerikanska militären och övriga NATO-länder för väderexperiment i jonosfären (atmosfärens översta del) och i stratosfären. Ref.

Denna gigantiska anläggning (en av världens största till ytan) bestående av 10 000 antenner, bildar en skog av omfattande elektromagnetisk strålning och påverkar naturen och människor MYCKET negativt.
Dessutom känner Ni säkert också till för att kunna genomföra dessa väderexperiment behövs även “chemtrails” (“contrails” med giftiga kemiska substanser i nanostorlek som vattnet kan kondensera runt, såsom aluminium, barium, titan, magnesium, järn, nickel och strontium) för att kunna skapa artificiella moln, som har visat sig ha mycket stor betydelse för jordens klimat. Det är dock inte enbart partiklar av nanostorlek som kan användas som kondensationskärnor för att bilda moln. Otaliga provanalyser i naturen såsom prover från växter, jord och sjöar samt berg, har även påvisat andra ämnen såsom virus, bakterier och svampsporer! Onormalt HÖGA halter av aluminium och barium har t ex påvisats både på växter och hos människor som genomgått urinprover samt blod- och håranalyser i bl a USA. När en undersökning av blodet gjordes på 18 personer från Mohave County,USA, eftersom dom kände sig sjuka utan att förstå varför, fann man hos 87% av dessa personer att aluminiumhalterna var SKYHÖGA och befann sig högt över gränsvärdena.
I ett naturreservat i Kalifornien fann man 500 GÅNGER förhöjda värden av aluminium, TROTS att det inte finns någon industri i närheten som förorenar dess närliggande omgivning.
I Sverige, där besprutning med chemtrails enbart har hållit på ca 2-3 år, varav de första 2 åren mycket sparsamt, har förfallet i den svenska naturen gått oerhört snabbt.
Bina håller helt och hållet på att försvinna. I södra Sverige är dom obefintliga.
Getingarna har försvunnit med en rasande fart.
10 000-tals fåglar har dött de senaste åren och olika fågelarter är på utdöende.
Maskrosorna har nästan försvunnit.
På grund av den kraftigt förgiftade jorden, håller olika insektsarter på att dö ut.
Många träd ser “vissna” ut, fast det regnat mycket denna sommar och när det blåser, så har det inte bara lossnat löv, utan DELAR AV GRENAR lossnar och ligger utspridda på gräsmattorna. Detta händer knappt under höstar!
Fiskbeståndet minskar oroväckande i Sverige (och i övriga världen).
Fåglarna beter sig förvirrat, eftersom dom är tvungna att flyga mycket lägre nu än förut, p.g.a de tunga och många lagren av elektromagnetiska, kemikaliska moln, som vilar tungt över oss alla.
EXTREMT kylig vinter hösten 2010 och våren 2011 med onormalt mycket snö.
Extremtorka, tromber, extremkyla, extrema skyfall av regn har förekommit i stor omfattning de senaste 2 åren i Sverige (utomlands har dessa extrema vädertyper förekommit olika länge beroende på hur länge ett visst land deltagit i detta monstruösa, gigantiska väderprojekt).
HUNDRA FÅGLAR ramlade DÖDA NED från himlen mitt på en gata i Falköping i början av januari 2011. CHOCKERANDE!!! Tusentals fåglar har gått samma öde till mötes i USA och hundratusentals fiskar har spolats upp döda på stränder i USA. (Se artikel i Aftonbladet, 5/1-2011)

I slutet på juli kunde man läsa i Aftonbladet att ett enormt isberg hade brutit sig loss från Petermannglaciären vid nordvästra kusten av Grönland. Isberget var DUBBELT SÅ STORT som Manhattan och rörde sig i havet och djup oro infann sig, att detta gigantiska isberg skulle äventyra sjöfarten. Många forskare är nu djupt oroliga över att havsisen smälter i oroväckande hög hastighet, eftersom det skett TVÅ kalvningar från glaciären på endast 2 år.

Forskare är fullständigt eniga rörande, att nanopartiklar är MYCKET SKADLIGA FÖR HÄLSAN hos både människor och djur!!! Eftersom dessa partiklar är så små, kan de lätt passera genom våra kroppar och lägga sig i blodbanorna och därefter skapa en hög koncentration av dessa partiklar, som sedan fastnar i blodet, i kroppens fettvävnad och i hjärnan, vilket kan orsaka blodproppar, hjärt- och kärlsjukdomar, men även besvär med lungorna såsom astma och bronkit är MYCKET vanligt förekommande!! Även cancer och sjukdomar i hjärnan såsom Parkinsons och Alzheimers har kunnat påvisats och som härrör från dessa nanopartiklar som ingår i chemtrail-besprutningarna.
Vetenskapliga undersökningar rörande chemtrails och dess skadliga påverkan på natur och människor har genomförts under ca 20 år (bl a i USA). Kända forskare, vetenskapsmän, ingenjörer etc., har under många år, riskerat hela sitt anseende och rykte, för att påvisa och höja medvetenheten hos planetens olika regeringar rörande dessa skadliga chemtrails och att denna hälsovådliga vädermanipulering håller nu på att döda både människor, djur och natur, både kortsiktigt och långsiktigt och som dessutom hotar hela planetens existens!!!!
TROTS detta så vägrar världens regeringar att lyssna och avfärdar alla dessa vetenskapliga tester som konspirationsteorier!!!!!! Tidningar och media får inte ta upp detta ämne och hundratusentals djupt oroliga medborgare världen över, får inga svar när dom försöker kommunicera med sina regeringar.
På grund av MYCKET starka påtryckningar från USA att hemlighålla detta “militära projekt”, så kan denna extremt destruktiva vädermanipulering få fortsätta dag ut och dag in, år ut och år in, utan att nästan någon politiker vågar ställa sig upp och höja sin röst! Eftersom denna amerikanska vädermodifiering är totalt hemligstämplat som ett “militärt projekt, så finns det ingen regering som vågar ifrågasätta om denna destruktiva vädermanipulering, som nu hotar hela människorasen och hela planetens existens är rätt väg att gå, för att “hantera” den “globala uppvärmningen”.
Fler och fler forskare höjer dessutom nu sina röster och menar att klimathotet och den “globala uppvärmningen” enbart är en FABRICERAD LÖGN och som skapades av USA för att få alla regeringar i världen att gå med på detta väderprojekt, i tron att dom bidrog till att minska “den globala uppvärmningen”.
I själva verket arbetar fler och fler experter efter hypotesen, att USA har en “dold agenda” och det är att USA vill få totalt monopol över vädret över hela planeten, för att kunna användas i ex.vis krig, såsom att orsaka torka, översvämningar, jordbävningar, orsaka skadliga virusepidemier i ett visst land och rent allmänt användas som ett påtryckningsmedel, för att få olika länder att “inrätta sig i ledet” och att målet är en “One World Government”…….
Oavsett vilket/vilka syften den amerikanska regeringen har med detta gigantiska väderprojekt, så har det inneburit att tusentals människor har dött, förlorat sina hem i jordbävningar, tsunamis, skogsbränder, skyfall, extremtorka och som troligtvis orsakats i många fall av detta manipulerande med jetströmmar, skapande av artificiella elektroniska moln (som pågår DAGLIGEN) och det kontinuerliga nedsmältandet av havsisen i Nordpolen. Fåglar, fiskar, insekter, blomarter, träd har dött och är på utdöende på grund av att jorden, haven är förgiftade och även luften vi andas är starkt förgiftad!
Massvis av människor runt planeten har fått svåra lungproblem, astma och allergier.
Ofantligt många människor planeten runt, LIDER också oerhört mycket av att inte längre få uppleva en NORMAL DJUPBLÅ HIMMEL med NORMALA fluffiga moln. Himlen är inte riktigt blå längre, utan är i bästa fall ljusblå eller vit och allmänt “nedsmetad” av alla dessa giftiga chemtrail-besprutningar.

I Sverige har det gjorts mätningar och analyser i södra Sverige, rörande aluminiumnivån i regnvattnet under ett par dagar i april 2012 och som sedan skickades till ett utländskt auktoriserat laboratorium för analys.
För ett par dagar sedan anlände provsvaren och uppvisade EXTREMT höga nivåer av aluminium!!! LÅNGT ÖVER GRÄNSVÄRDET! Dessutom påträffades även URAN och ARSENIK!! (Se bilaga)
Aluminium, Uran och Arsenik är TUNGMETALLER och EJ naturliga och borde överhuvudtaget inte förekomma i naturen.

Planetary Weapons and Military Weather Modification: Chemtrails, Atmospheric Geoengineering and Environmental Warfare

Developed in 1988 by the United Nations Environment Programme and the UN’s World Meteorological Organization, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) just published its Fifth Assessment Report [1] and maintains its silence on military weather modification applications which continue to skew the data.

“Extreme weather and climate events” are linked to climate change while no mention is made of government programs deliberately aimed at modifying the weather and inducing earthquakes, drought, rain, and tsunamis.

The modern weather modification program, at least in the US, is over 70 years old. Public service announcements printed in newspapers back in the 1960s warned of government intention to modify the weather.

Life Magazine, back in the 50s and 60s, continually covered US weather modification programs, including Project Stormfury which redirected and reduced hurricane intensity from 1962 to 1983. The IPCC’s continuing and absolute silence on such programs is deafening.

With insider knowledge, a chapter in the 1968 book, Unless Peace Comes: A Scientific Forecast of New Weapons, predicts the development of technologies that will use the planet itself as a weapon. The chapter, “How to Wreck the Environment,” [2] was penned by geophysicist and member of President Johnson’s Science Advisory Committee, Dr. Gordon J.F. MacDonald, wherein he states:

“The key to geophysical warfare is the identification of the environmental instabilities to which the addition of a small amount of energy would release vastly greater amounts of energy.”

The chapter envisions four planetary weapons which MacDonald predicted would be fully developed by the 21st century, based on the then-current state of research:

• Climate modification;
• Earthquake generation;
• Tsunami generation and direction; and
• Mass behavior control via electromagnetic manipulation of the ionosphere.

The idea is carried forward in several geoengineering schemes detailed in Eli Kintisch’s Hack the Planet, in a chapter entitled “The Pursuit of Levers,” explained as “small changes in Earth’s system that can have profound global effects.” [3]

As LBJ’s Science Advisor, MacDonald surely knew of the military’s weather modification program known as Operation Popeye, which ran from 1967 thru 1972 in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. By seeding clouds, the US military caused torrential downpours that inhibited enemy truck and troop movements. Initially exposed by investigative journalist Jack Anderson, the existence of the project was later corroborated in The Pentagon Papers.

In 1996, world renowned scientist Dr. Rosalie Bertell, who served on the Bhopal and the Chernobyl Medical Commissions, and was a recipient of the Right Livelihood Award, published “Background on HAARP,” [4] describing Dr. Bernard Eastlund’s brainchild, the US High Frequency Active Auroral Research Project, as follows:

“It would be rash to assume that HAARP is an isolated experiment which would not be expanded. It is related to fifty years of intensive and increasingly destructive programs to understand and control the upper atmosphere. It would be rash not to associate HAARP with the space laboratory construction which is separately being planned by the United States. HAARP is an integral part of a long history of space research and development of a deliberate military nature.”

In 2000, reports Prof. Michel Chossudovsky, Dr Bertell told The Times of London, “US military scientists … are working on weather systems as a potential weapon. The methods include the enhancing of storms and the diverting of vapor rivers in the Earth’s atmosphere to produce targeted droughts or floods.” [5]

HAARP’s use of the ionosphere through radio frequencies, explains Dr. Nick Begich, co-author of Angels Don’t Play This HAARP, also triggers earthquakes and volcanoes. [6] Begich quotes Clinton’s Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen, who said in 1997 at a conference on terrorism:

“Others are engaging even in an eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely through the use of electromagnetic waves.” [7]

Pragmatically, the US wouldn’t be worried about such weapons unless they knew with certainty that they were feasible and had, in all likelihood, already developed them itself.

In “Atmospheric Geoengineering: Weather Manipulation, Contrails and Chemtrails,” which was named the 9^th most censored story in 2012 by Project Censored, a brief history of known geoengineering events was published. [8] From that report, the IPCC’s co-founder, the World Meteorological Organization, complained six years ago, in 2007, that:

“In recent years there has been a decline in the support for weather modification research, and a tendency to move directly into operational projects.” [9]

But the IPCC remains mum on these projects, except to deny they exist, while at the same time urging in its Summary that they must continue or global warming will spike. The 2013 IPCC report states:

“Theory, model studies and observations suggest that some Solar Radiation Management (SRM) methods, if practicable, could substantially offset a global temperature rise and partially offset some other impacts of global warming, but the compensation for the climate change caused by greenhouse gases would be imprecise (high confidence).” [emphasis in original]

To claim that solar radiation management methods (which include chemtrails and HAARP-induced changes) are “unimplemented and untested” is patently absurd, and contradicts a library of evidence.

Geoengineering Patents

On March 26, 2013, the US Patent and Trademark Office granted a patent to Rolls-Royce PLC to prevent contrails from forming. [10] By using an electromagnetic wave generator, contrails would not be visible, nor would artificial clouds develop.

It’s not the first such patent. Back in 1962 the US Air Force wanted to add caustic chemicals to hide contrails and prevent unintentional cirrus cloud formation. Patent No. 3,517,505 was granted eight years later, in 1970. Patent, No. 5,005,355, granted in 1988 to Scipar, Inc., used various species of alcohol, which effectively lowered the freezing point of water to avoid contrail formation. The 2013 patent characterized both of these earlier patents as environmentally inappropriate for commercial purposes.

For a partial list of patents for stratospheric aerial spraying programs from 1917 thru mid-2003, see Lori Kramer’s “Patently Obvious: A Partial History of Aerosol and Weather Related Technologies.” [11] Weather Warfare by Jerry Smith also includes an appendix of HAARP-related patents. [12]

A Note on Persistent Contrails

What some see as chemtrails, the IPCC and others recognize as persistent contrails that are a normal effect of today’s jet exhaust.

In the 2006 book, Weather Warfare, Jerry Smith explains that persistent contrails are not necessarily chemtrails. From the 1990s on, he explains, all jet engines were modified with a “high bypass turbofan” which increased fuel efficiency and, as a side effect, left persistent contrails that hazed into cirrus clouds after several hours. This is the timeframe when chemtrail sightings begin.

The reason today’s jets now form persistent contrails, explains Marshall Smith, a former NASA-Ames aeronautical engineer, is that the sooty particulates in older jet exhaust provided a nucleus around which ice crystals would form (giving us a contrail). But because of its dark color, the sooty particulate absorbed solar energy which melted the ice crystals, dissipating the contrail. Today’s cleaner and thus clearer jet exhaust allows solar energy to pass right through it, and so contrails persist and spread into high cirrus clouds lasting 24-36 hours.

Smith admits that this development does not disprove chemical, biological or metallic dispersants from jets, and he also states that such dispersants can be sprayed without leaving a chemtrail, depending on the particulate, and on the humidity and atmospheric temperature. But, later, in 2009, he published the following:

“‘Chemtrails’ theory then, is that ‘normal’ jet aircraft contrails disappear in a few minutes, whereas ‘chemtrails’ persist for hours, and therefore are not ‘normal’ and must contain some covert element to make them persist…. Persistent jet contrails can be entirely explained by science without having to resort to a ‘conspiracy theory’ scenario. They appear to be no more than the natural result of the introduction of the hi-bypass turbo fan, improved jet fuel (JP-8) and ‘global warming.’” [13]

The transition to more efficient jet fuel and cold-flow additives supports this explanation, but none of that can explain the following image, taken earlier this year in Raglan, New Zealand:

The dot-dash effects seen in the sky, Smith explains, are the result of the jet exhaust passing thru sections in the atmosphere that are warmer, creating a broken line or dotted contrail. The following image makes that explanation implausible. Instead, it illustrates that as the plane passed, an on-off switch was thrown several times. It’s hardly likely the ambient temperature and humidity uniformly varied where the plane traveled.

The IPCC specifically addressed the impact of global aviation on the atmosphere in a 2000 report, noting that aircraft were then responsible for up to a half a percent of all of Earth’s cirrus cloud coverage, and that cirrus clouds tend to warm the surface of the planet. [14]

However, the high-bypass turbo fan and better grade fuel do not explain the grid pattern often seen which is clearly not normal air traffic lanes. Below are two images showing the grid pattern. The first, a generic one found on the web , is one of many such images uploaded by concerned citizens who reasonably fail to recognize a normal set of flight lanes.

Finally, the fine dusting of web-like filaments referred to as chemwebs can be explained by a natural arachnid phenomenon known as Gossamer Showers or Gossamer Filaments. Spiders are known to balloon, spreading their webs over the land for miles. Referred to throughout history, naturalist Henry Christopher McCook wrote about them in his 1890 book, American Spiders and Their Spinningwork. [15]

Unless lab results prove otherwise, these webs are natural and should remain outside the chemtrails discussion.

Impossible to Regulate?

Weather Warfare also spends a good deal of time covering the international agreements against environmental modification (ENMOD). The first major one came in 1978, after the US was exposed for weaponizing weather during the Vietnam War. Smith points out that none of these agreements cover “national defense” which is how governments are able to avoid the ban.

That 1978 agreement specifically objected to hostile use of ENMOD. In 2010, the UN banned friendly ENMOD. [16] The 193-member Convention on Biodiversity agreed by consensus to a moratorium on geoengineering projects and experiments, which governments promptly ignored. With no teeth to that moratorium, it’s not too surprising that such programs continue unabated.

Not two months later, in Cancun, Mexico, at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the IPCC opened the 2010 conference by promoting geoengineering options. [17]

On a practical level, notes the International Risk Governance Council:

“Countries and firms routinely fly various aircraft in the stratosphere, or send rockets through the stratosphere into space. These activities release significant quantities of particles and gases. A requirement for formal prior approval of small field studies, just because they are directed at learning about SRM and its limitations, is probably unenforceable because judging intent is often impossible.” [18]

In Hack the Planet, Kintisch opposes an outright global ban on geoengineering, fearing that governments will simply go underground with it. This is bad, he stresses, because it will “worsen perceptions that [geoengineering is] a quasi-military strategy or a technocratic means of control.” Going further, he states:

“A vibrant community of conspiracy theorists is under the belief that geoengineering is already being deployed by governments by releasing so-called chemtrails in the sky.”

But de facto moratoria already exist for such projects, as mentioned above, and Kintisch lists some others, including the London Protocol, the London Convention and a German restriction limiting iron-seeding to coastal waters only. The only element missing in Kintisch’s reasoning is his refusal to believe that governments have already gone underground with it and that geoengineering is already underway.

Kintisch, like all government propagandists, wields the “conspiracy theorist” label like a club, without once offering any logical counter-argument to explain what thousands of sky watchers have observed and documented with photographs, videos, and soil and water tests.

Conspiracies are argued and decided by the thousands in courts all over the world, every day. Most crimes are not committed by lone actors, yet condemning those who recognize a conspiracy pattern has become a simple and lazy way to crush investigation into inconsistencies in government position statements. Bradley Manning, Edward Snowden and Wikileaks, along with Daniel Ellsberg, Karen Hudes and W. Mark Felt, certainly prove that governments are the most dangerous conspirators facing humanity today.

Though he offers dozens of reasons why geoengineering the planet would be a bad idea, Kintisch comes out in support of the notion, likening it to a terrarium, “an enclosed controlled garden,” leaving the reader with a sense that planet hacking is a necessary evil that should be regulated.

Modifying the Weather for Profit

In related news, the ecocidal giant, Monsanto, just dropped nearly a billion dollars to get into the weather insurance game, buying Climate Corporation. Forbes reports, “The idea is to sell more data and services to the farmers who already buy Monsanto’s seed and chemicals.” [19]

Already closely tied to the military, how easy would it be for Monsanto to know in advance of a geoengineered drought or deluge? Monsanto expects its climate insurance business to generate $20 billion in revenue beyond its seed and chemical business.

Likewise, how easy would it be for a nation with decades of experience in modifying the weather and in triggering geophysical events to create the problem of climate change (or exaggerate its significance) to induce the world into approving, even demanding, geoengineering? With decades of patents providing a history of capabilities, could this entire drama, including “extreme weather events” be orchestrated for the simple pursuit of profit?

Isn’t this precisely how the Hegelian Dialect works? Problem→Reaction→Solution (Thesis→Antithesis→Synthesis). In other words, those in a position of power invent a problem, anticipating the public’s reaction to it, and use that reaction to generate demand for the “solution” which was the intended program power-holders wanted to implement in the first place.

At the very least, while the veil may be lifting on geoengineering practices, there is still an apparent effort to conceal the extent to which the planet is already being engineered.

Armed Forces Structure

OVERVIEW
The air force arm of the Israel Defense Forces (Tsvah Haganah le Israel Heyl Ha’Avir ) is one of the largest and most capable air forces in the Middle East.
The primary missions of the Israeli air force include:
defend Israel’s airspace and the IDF’s area of operations;
achieve air superiority above the area of combat in a ground war;
attack strategic targets in enemy territory;
participate in combat in the naval theater;
carry out air transport operations;
provide air intelligence as part of the general intelligence picture;
carry out aerial photography mission for all IDF needs;
perform air search-and-rescue missions; and
assist civil aviation authorities in command, control and services.
Due to the integrated structure of the Israel Defense Forces, the air force is solely responsible for providing a “protective umbrella” over the nation. Israel is also continuing the development of an anti-tactical ballistic missile (ATBM) capability, centered around the Arrow missile defense system.
The air force (IAF) is organized into:

The Air Defense Command has been under air force control (officially) since December 1970. Seventeen air defense battalions assist ground force operations and protect air force bases.

PERSONNEL STRENGTH
The IAF numbers 34,000 active-duty personnel, including 24,500 conscripts (mainly assigned to air defense). IAF reserves can mobilize an additional 55,000 personnel.

Issues

Israel has a significant number of surplus aircraft that are being offered for sale.
In September 2008, a Cobra attack helicopter crashed during a training mission near Afula in northern Israel, killing two pilots and prompting the air force to ground the aircraft during the investigation.
A Zukit crashed during a training flight in October 2008, killing the cadet and flight instructor and prompting all of the aircraft to be temporarily grounded.
The F-16I fleet was temporarily grounded in September 2009 after an engine fouled during a routine training flight and the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing.
An F-16A crashed during a routine training exercise in September 2009. The pilot, Assaf Ramon, 21, was the son of the late Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, who died when the Columbia shuttle exploded in 2003.
In July 2010, an Israeli CH-53 helicopter crashed in Romania, killing six Israelis and a Romanian. The Israeli air force grounded all CH-53s in the wake of the crash.
In November 2010, an Israeli F-16I crashed in the Negev desert, killing both the pilot and the navigator. The crash was the result of human error.
Plans and Programs

The Israeli air force put the first of its new airborne early warning system planes into service in the spring of 2008. The Eitam aircraft, which is based on a Gulfstream G550 business jet, features the Phalcon radar system. The new plane will replace Israel’s Boeing 707 AEW aircraft.
Israel ordered 102 F-16I fighters from the U.S. in 2003, with the last models arriving in late 2008. Some of the F-16A /Bs have been placed in reserve. Training flights were temporarily suspended in March 2008 when a suspected carcinogen was found in the cockpit of a few U.S.-made F-16Is, but delivery of the aircraft was not halted.
Israel plans to replace its C-130E Hercules transport aircraft with the C-130J variant, to be used for long-range missions and precision airdrops. Up to nine aircraft were ordered in August 2008 for $1.9 billion. An order for another C-130 -J-30 was placed in April 2011. Three additional aircraft are being purchased by the United States as part of a foreign aid package. The first was ordered in April 2010 and is slated to be delivered in the spring of 2013. The next two aircraft should be handed over in late 2013 and early 2014. Some C-130Hs may also be upgraded to fly until 2025.
The air force’s Shachaf (Sea Scan) surveillance seaplanes received a complete upgrade in late 2010. A new observation system was installed on the aircraft as part of a modernization designed to keep the planes operational for several more years.
Israel requested to purchase KC-767 refueling aircraft from the United States, but the order was refused in August 2008.
In October 2008, the air force decided to abandon U.S.-made cluster bombs in favor of the M85 cluster bomb, made by Israel Military Industries (IMI). The decision was reportedly made after the U.S. munitions failed to explode 30 to 40 percent of the time during the 2006 Lebanon War.
In October 2008, the air force announced the development of a non-asphalt substance that can restore damaged runways within minutes, allowing fighters to take off and land during enemy missile and rocket strikes.
The air force announced in December 2008 that it was looking to replace its aging A-4 Skyhawk aircraft, which were first acquired in 1967 before being phased out in the early 1980s. They are used as trainers or electronic warfare aircraft. Possible replacements include older F-16s, U.S. T-45s, South Korean T-50s or Italian trainers.
Israel has long expressed interest in purchasing the F-22 , but so far the U.S. has declined to sell the aircraft to any foreign powers.
The air force purchased in August 2009 over 100 LJDAM (laser joint direct attack munition) kits from the United States to convert unguided bombs into “smart” weapons. The kit includes a tail section with a GPS device; body improvements for additional stability and lift; and a laser seeker to improve the bomb’s ability to accurately engage moving targets.
The Israeli air force is interested in procuring acquiring micro-satellites. The satellites would give the military more versatility, while enabling main space assets to continue their intelligence-gathering and strategic operations.
UAV Programs
In late 1007, Israel began forming its unmanned aerial vehicles into a three-tiered force based on the medium-altitude Hermes 450, the Heron 1, the high-altitude Eitan, as well as a mini-UAV soon to be selected. The Searcher 2 is slated to be phased out.
To that end, Israel ordered new Hermes -450 UAVs from Elbit Systems in November 2007. Elbit will also upgrade existing Hermes UAVs as part of the three-year program.
The long-endurance Eitan UAV, believed to be the largest UAV in the world, was unveiled by the Israeli air force in early 2010. The UAV, which has an 85-foot wingspan, can remain in the air for more than 24 consecutive hours, reach an altitude of 43,000 feet and carry payloads of about one ton.
Israel ordered miniature Skylark I LE UAVs as part of a $40 million deal in January 2009 for all Israeli ground forces battalions, as well as training and logistics support. Delivery is expected to take a few years.
In late 2009, the Israeli air force and the army’s ground forces command put out a request for proposals for a stealthy unmanned aerial vehicle capable of flying undetected in combat zones. The UAV should be able to operate at relatively low altitudes of 3,000 feet and be capable of flying for up to 10 hours at a time.
In 2010, Israel awarded Elbit Systems a $50 million contract to provide its Hermes 900 unmanned systems along with some Hermes 450 systems to the military.
In late 2010, the Israeli air force activated its first unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) squadron equipped with Eitan aircraft at the Tel-Nof air force base.
Helicopter Acquisition and Modernization
The Israeli air force is testing an indigenously upgraded version of the Chinook heavy-lift helicopter, the CH-53-2000. The Yas’ur (Clearwater) 2025 program is designed to keep the helicopters in front-line duty through 2025. The first heavy-lift helicopter prototype was unveiled on November 2007. The helicopters will be equipped with new avionics architecture, rewired electrical power system and an automatic hovering system that allows it to maintain a position in situations where the crew has limited visual recognition points.
Military officials test-flew U.S. Marine V-22 tilt-rotor Ospreys in North Carolina in May and June 2011. There are no known plans to acquire the aircraft.
The air force announced in April 2009 that it was negotiating with Boeing to upgrade four AH-64A Apache helicopters to the AH-64D Longbow standard. It was also negotiating the purchase of six new AH-64Ds. The United States later blocked the sale.
The air force acknowledged in July 2011 that it was considering an active protection systems for its helicopters similar to the Trophy system to protect tanks.
Joint Strike Fighter
In May 2008, Israel formally requested to purchase 25 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters from the U.S. for US$80 million each, with options for another 50 jets. The planes will be used to replace the F-16 fleet. The first aircraft was scheduled for a 2014 delivery, although Israel reportedly asked that be bumped up to mid-2012.
The Pentagon approved the sale in October 2008. At least 25 of the aircraft will be the F-35A conventional takeoff variant. Some of the remaining jets may be of the F-35B short takeoff/vertical landing design. A subsequent request to install some Israeli parts in the fighters jeopardized the deal, as the U.S. was concerned such a move would grant Israeli access to classified systems.
Disputes over the price of the fighter and the issue of Israeli systems led the air force briefly to consider purchasing Boeing’s F-15 Silent Eagles as an alternative to the Joint Strike Fighter . Boeing told Israel in April 2009 that its plane could be ready as early as 2011.
In particular, Israel requested access to classified computer systems for repair purposes. Israeli officials argued that in the event of war, its air force could not wait for computers to be shipped to and from the U.S.
By June 2009, the Defense Ministry and the Pentagon announced an understanding. Israel reported that it had found a way to bypass the classified mainframe when conducting repairs and installing new systems. An official letter of request for 25 aircraft was sent in that same month, with an option for 50 more, similar to the original May 2008 request.
Israel announced in September 2009 that price considerations might reduce the initial order to 20 aircraft if the unit cost were to be significantly more than US$100 million. It was also indicated that an early 2010 contract target date would probably not be met.
Delays in the program mean that the United States would not receive its first fighter until 2015, which would push back the delivery date for other countries interested in purchasing the jet. Because of the delay, Israeli air force officials called for a review of the F-35 procurement plan.
In mid-2010, Defense Minister Ehud Barak approved the purchase of 20 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters for the Israeli air force. The jets are scheduled for delivery between 2015 and 2017. The deal is worth an estimated US$2.7 billion. Israel signed the agreement for the aircraft in October.
Missile Defense Program
In response to the threat of rocket attacks from Hezbollah, Hamas and Iran, Israel has launched an ambitious missile shield program to protect the nation from a range of projectiles, from extremely short-range to long-range weapons.
Testing of the Arrow 2 missile defense system, which includes the Green Pine radar system, began in early 2008. It passed its 18th test in March 2009. The Arrow , which is being developed in conjunction with the United States, is designed to defend against long-range ballistic missiles similar to the Iranian Shahab 3. It is expected to deploy by 2012.
The U.S. has also pledged to assist in development of the Arrow 3, which will be a longer-range version of the current Arrow system. The system should become operational in 2012 or 2013.
David’s Sling is designed to counter a broad range of projectiles, from very short-range to medium-range missiles. It is being developed in conjunction with the U.S. and expected to enter service in 2012 or 2013. The air force is considering it as a replacement for the 50-year-old MIM-23 Hawk surface-to-air missile systems.
The $200 million Iron Dome system, designed for protection against short-range rockets, was successfully tested in July 2008. It passed critical tests in March 2009, July 2009, January 2010, and July 2010.
A new battalion to operate the Iron Dome stood up in August 2009. It is a part of the air defense division, which also operates Arrow . The first Iron Dome battery was deployed outside of Beersheba in March 2011. A second system, which was deployed near Ashkelon the following month, destroyed two rockets that were fired from the Gaza Strip. There are plans to deploy several more batteries through 2013.
The Magic Wand system, which is designed to complement the short-range Iron Dome , could be deployed as early as 2013 to protect against short-range and cruise missiles.
Israel also tested and deployed a prototype laser system near Gaza in July 2008 to intercept rockets, mortars and missiles at significant ranges. The Laser Air Defense System (LADS) could also be used as a way to defend against Kassam rockets and mortars.
Israel struck a deal with the United States in August 2008 to deploy an X-band radar to guard against a potential missile attack from Iran. The radar can track medium- and long-range radars in space and target incoming missiles for anti-missile systems. It is manned by U.S. personnel.
The Israeli Defense Ministry said in April 2009 that it would like to buy the U.S. Vulcan -Phalanx missile defense system as a front-line system to protect southern Israel from rocket and mortar attacks.
Israel’s Nuclear Program
Much secrecy surrounds Israel’s nuclear weapons program. The country will neither confirm nor deny its possession of nuclear weapons. There is, however, abundant evidence of its existence. According to a November 1994 report, nuclear research and development, as well as testing and storage of tactical and strategic nuclear weapons, takes place at seven locations within Israel, including Dimona, Soreq, Palmikim Missile Test Range, Yodefat, Be’er Yaakov, Kefar Zekharya and Eilabun.
The following is derived from multiple sources:
Dimona, located in the Negev Desert, is the site of a nuclear reactor and Israel’s main plutonium processing plant. Soreq is also home to one of Israel’s nuclear research reactors and has extensive nuclear weapons research and development facilities. Located just north of Soreq is the Palmikim Missile Test Range where delivery systems such as the Jericho SSM are flight-tested. A Jericho II was test-fired at the Palmikim range on Sept. 14, 1989. Yodefat, east of Haifa, houses nuclear weapons assembly and dismantling facilities, while Be’er Yaakov is an assembly point for Jericho II SSMs. Eilabun and Kefar Zekharya are both nuclear weapons storage sites.
According to reports, Kefar Zekharya contains a number of Jericho II nuclear-tipped ballistic missile sites. Estimates suggest that up to 50 nuclear-tipped Jericho IIs are bunkered at this location. During the Gulf War, a Jericho II was test-fired from this site, hitting 1,300 km away at a point south of the Greek island of Crete.
The Arrow surface-to-air missile and Jericho II are assembled at Be’er Yaakov, while warhead construction is carried out at Rafale ‘s Division 20 at Yodefat.

Given the integrated structure of the IDF, there is no separate ground forces aviation wing. Close air support for the ground forces is provided by the Israeli air force. Cobra and Apache helicopter gunships are used for close-fire support and several types of fixed-wing transports are designated for paratroop operations.
Special Forces
Israel’s military operates a number of counter-terrorist and special operations units, including naval commandos (See Israel Navy), Mista’arvim, Sayeret Mat’kal, Ya’ma’m, Ya’ma’s and Yechidat Shaldag.
Mista’arvim (“The Arabists”)
This unit was formed to infiltrate and neutralize leaders of the Palestinian uprising. Operatives disguised as local Arabs frequently operated in the West Bank and Gaza Strip until the Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza. The status of this group is currently unknown. Two units of the Mista’arvim, the Duvdevan (“Cherry”) and Shimshon (“Samson “), have operated in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, respectively.
The Sayeret Mat’kal
This unit is the General Staff’s highly trained, long-range reconnaissance unit — often inserted deep behind enemy lines. Formed in 1957, this super-secret unit has been credited with the assassination of three of Black September’s top lieutenants in the 1970s and participation in the successful Entebbe rescue operation in 1976 in Uganda. Reports also linked the Sayeret Mat’kal to the assassination of PLO deputy commander Abu Jihad in 1988 and the 1989 abduction of Sheikh Abdel Karim Obeid, one of Hezbollah’s top commanders.
Ya’ma’m
The Hebrew acronym for Special Police Anti-Terrorist Unit, and Ya’ma’s, the Hebrew acronym for Special Undercover Unit, are both part of the National Police Border Guard. The former is trained in hostage-rescue operations, while the latter specializes in undercover operations primarily in the West Bank.

PERSONNEL STRENGTH
The IDF ground forces number 133,000 active-duty personnel, including 107,000 conscripts. Approximately 500,000 personnel are on rapid mobilization status. Reservists serve 29 days annually.

The army began construction on a base at Ir HaBahadim in the Negev in August 2008. It will house the IDF’s Armaments School, Logistics Training School and military police.
Issues

A Merkava Mark 3 overturned during a joint training exercise between armored and infantry units in the Golan Heights in August 2009, killing the commander and injuring the three troops inside. An infantryman in the area also died a few days later after being accidentally shot in the back.
The Israeli military plans to train its infantry troops in basic Arabic. The new course will cover Arabic, Arab culture and basic interrogation methods, and is designed to improve real-time intelligence-gathering capabilities during combat.
Plans and Programs

In March 2008, the Israel Defense Forces unveiled its newest infantry combat vehicle. The Tiger (Namer in Hebrew) is built on the chassis of the Merkava 1 tank and is designed to offer more protection against anti-tank weapons. An undetermined number of the vehicles were expected to be fielded by the end of 2008.
A fifth mechanized infantry brigade (Kfir) has been formed, combining five independent battalions.
Around 400 Merkava Mark 4 main battle tanks are being produced at the rate of 50-70 per year, replacing older MBTs. Starting in 2010, new Merkava Mark 4s were expected to be equipped with the Trophy anti-missile system, designed by Rafael. Trophy was declared fully operational in August 2009 and has been installed on a number of Mark 4s in the 401st Armored Brigade. The system successfully intercepted an anti-tank missile that was fired near the Gaza Strip in early 2011.
Israel and Navistar Defense entered into a US$12 million contract for medium tactical vehicles in January 2010. The contract covers 114 vehicles that are based on Navistar’s International 7000-series platform, including cargo, recovery and tow trucks, but not parts and service.
In May 2006, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Ground Forces Command submitted a formal requirement for two rockets to be developed by the state-owned defense industry. The missiles are said to have a range of 300 km (186 mi) with the capability to make precision strikes on high-value targets.
The Spike /Gill family of anti-tank missiles is being introduced into the IDF. They are portable fire-and-forget weapons that use electro-optical and fiber-optic technologies.
The army has a requirement for 18 ATMOS 2000 self-propelled howitzers. The 155-mm howitzers will equip three battalions.
The army chose the MARS hand-held thermal imager and target acquisition system for use by its infantry for close combat in July 2008. The system incorporates a laser rangefinder, digital magnetic compass and Global Positioning System receiver.
Under a multi-year US$100 million plan, the Israeli military will equip all of its infantry and armor brigades with ground-based satellite dishes to improve their communication abilities. The very small aperture terminal (VSAT) two-way broadband satellite communication systems will enable commanders to communicate with headquarters and receive live video from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Israel Military Industries (IMI) announced in September 2008 the development of a 120-mm satellite-guided mortar round with a range of 6 miles that is able to hit a target within a 10-foot radius. Israeli armored units deployed near Gaza have fielded the M339 high-explosive multi-purpose round, known as the Kalanit in Hebrew. It is designed to penetrate bunkers before exploding.
The artillery corps was equipped in December 2008 with a radar system that can pinpoint the launch site of rocket and mortar attacks, allowing for effective retaliation against Hamas and Hezbollah militants.
The artillery corps is also considering the Accular advanced rocket. It is a 60-mm, GPS -guided surface-to-surface missile that is designed to destroy artillery batteries and infantry command posts.
A new tank shell developed by IMI was tested in July 2009. The 120-mm Calanit (Anemone) shell can be fired over a hill and explode above enemy anti-tank squads. The fire-and-forget weapon works with an electronic targeting system to release six explosive charges in mid-air.
The army is assessing the potential use of the Magic Spear rocket system. The 160-mm rocket is an autonomous surface-to-surface missile with a range of 30 miles (50 km) and GPS guidance enabling it to hit within 30 feet (10 m) of a target. It is fired from IMI’s Lynx launcher, which can fire a variety of rockets at ranges of up to 90 miles (150 km).

Armed Forces Structure

OVERVIEW
The Israeli navy operates surface and sub-surface naval vessels in defense of Israel’s Mediterranean and Red Sea maritime boundaries.
Naval aircraft, including patrol, search-and-rescue, surveillance and helicopter gunships, are maintained and flown by air force personnel.
The Israeli navy is organized into the following units:

Underwater missions unit
Port security unit
Maritime control unit
The Naval Commando Flotilla consists of a commando unit and a frogman squadron. There are two main principles guiding naval commando doctrine:
· Every defense system is vulnerable.
· The enemy can deal with weapons and operational methods that are known; for that reason, naval commandos use imagination, daring and initiative to create situations that cannot be anticipated.
The Naval Commando Flotilla is known to use inflatable Zodiacs and the more heavily armed Swallow (Snunit) high-speed boats, as well as the Navy’s DABUR- and SA’AR-class patrol boats. IAF helicopter and aircraft assets are routinely used in Naval Commando Flotilla operations.
Top officials in the IDF predict an expanded role for the Israeli submarines in the Mediterranean Sea in the future. The boats will continue to be used for clandestine surveillance, but will likely expand their deterrent role. Many analysts believe that Israeli submarines can be equipped with nuclear weapons, thus giving them a “second-strike” option.
In mid-June 2011, the navy carried out an exercise designed to prepare for an “aid flotilla” to Gaza by outside activists. In May 2010, nine civilians were killed when navy commandos boarded a Turkish ship breaking the Israeli blockade.
Relations with Turkey grew worse after the 2008-2009 Gaza war. In mid-2010, for example, Turkey pulled out of a naval search-and-rescue drill with Israel and the U.S.

PERSONNEL STRENGTH
The Israeli navy numbers about 9,500 active-duty personnel, including 2,500 conscripts. The reserve force totals approximately 10,000. Some 300 personnel are trained as commandos and frogmen.

The air force arm of the Israel Defense Forces operates a number of fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft in support of naval operations, including:

The Israeli navy in March 2006 got involved for the first time in efforts to counter Kassam rockets launched by Palestinian militants. Israeli DVORA and SHALDAG -type ships fired dozens of shells at Kassam launching sites in northern Gaza. The bombardments complemented Israeli army artillery fire also aimed at deterring militants from firing rockets at Israeli villages.
In mid-March 2011, the Israeli navy seized a ship 200 miles off the coast of Israel which was traveling from Turkey to Egypt. Commandos reported finding Iranian weapons, likely bound for Gaza.
Plans and Programs

Israel accepted three Super Dvora Mark III patrol boats from manufacturer IAI in September 2006. Four more were being constructed at the time with a waterjet propulsion system in place of the Arneson Surface Drive-16 propulsion systems on the first six. Israel also ordered three Kingfisher (Shaldag ) patrol craft. Deliveries of the new boats have been completed. The vessels are equipped to perform patrol, search-and-rescue, coastal defense, counterterrorism, anti-infiltration and anti-smuggling missions.
A missile defense system is being tested on the two classes of patrol boats. The system includes a radar to detect and track incoming missiles and an electronic warfare system to jam missiles and divert them from their course. Improvements to anti-ship capabilities among Hamas and Hezbollah militants prompted development of the defense system.
The navy successfully tested the Barak -1 naval missile shield in late 2008. The system is designed to protect Israeli naval vessels from air-to-surface and sea-to-sea missiles over a 360-degree radius, as well as cruise missiles, smart bombs and aerial bombs. Another successful test was carried out in July 2009.
In late 2009, the Israeli navy announced that it would begin to make use of unmanned vessels for Mediterranean patrol duty. The Protector vessels and another undisclosed system were used in the Gaza War.
Ship Acquisition and Modernization
Israel and Northrop Grumman have negotiated the purchase of a new class of improved Sa’ar V corvettes. The ships were expected to replace the HETZ/NIRIT-class ships by 2011. Funding for the new ships will come from the $2.2 billion annual U.S. military aid package.
Four DEFENDER -class patrol boats were ordered in early 2006 from SAFE Boats International of Port Orchard, Wash. The vessels will be used for port security and to counter insurgents and weapons smugglers.
Israel placed an order for four Littoral Combat Ships for US$1.9 billion in July 2008. Israel said it was interested only in the Lockheed Martin version of the class. In June 2009, Israel abandoned the order, instead deciding to build at least two littoral ships itself. Rising costs of Lockheed’s L CS reportedly contributed to the decision.
Israel has expressed interest in acquiring two German MEKO A-200 corvettes. The vessels have an estimated value US$600 million to US$750 million. They would used as part of Israel’s missile defense system and could be armed with U.S. weapons, as well as an Israeli radar and Barak 8 missile defense system. However, by mid-2011. Israel was again said to be considering LCS vessels over the MEKO ships.
Submarine Acquisition and Modernization
Israel finalized an agreement in 2006 to buy two new DOLPHIN-class submarines from German company Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG under a US$1.27 billion contract. The boats were delivered in late September 2009, well ahead of a 2010 expected delivery date. Germany picked up a third of the cost. The subs feature a new German propulsion system, which combines a conventional diesel lead-acid battery system and an air-independent propulsion system, as well as a fuel cell equipped with oxygen and hydrogen storage. The submarines are reportedly capable of launching cruise missiles carrying nuclear warheads.
A deal to purchase a sixth DOLPHIN-class boat was finalized in 2011. Israel currently has three DOLPHIN submarines, two more on order expected to be delivered by 2013.
Israel previously announced plans to decommission the GAL-class boats after the arrival of the DOLPHIN submarines.

Come 8th and 9th grades they get warped lessons in American History. Millions of children are enslaved in public schools that more closely resemble correctional facilities, they are isolated from competition, stifled by union rules, and force fed a steady diatribe of racist and leftist propaganda. In 2009, when the Detroit Public School (DPS) system was facing bankruptcy engendered by huge operating deficits and widespread corruption, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan characterized it as a national disgrace. The disgrace, unfortunately, is much more than meets the eye: For all of the bankrupting spending, the school systems educational results for the 88 percent black student population remain abysmal. Geothermal energy developers plan to pump 24 million gallons of water into the side of a dormant volcano in central Oregon this summer to demonstrate technology they hope will give a boost to a green energy sector that has yet to live up to its promise.

They hope the water comes back to the surface fast enough and hot enough to create cheap, clean electricity that isn’t dependent on sunny skies or stiff breezes – without shaking the earth and rattling the nerves of nearby residents.

Renewable energy has been held back by cheap natural gas, weak demand for power and lack of political concern over global warming. Efforts to use the earth’s heat to generate power, known as geothermal energy, have been further hampered by technical problems and worries that tapping it can cause earthquakes.

Even so, the federal government, Google and other investors are interested enough to bet $43 million on the Oregon project.

They are helping AltaRock Energy of Seattle and Davenport Newberry Holdings of Stamford, Conn., demonstrate whether the next level in geothermal power development can work on the flanks of Newberry Volcano, about 20 miles south of Bend, Ore.

“We know the heat is there,” says Susan Petty, president of AltaRock. “The big issue is can we circulate enough water through the system to make it economic.”

The heat in the earth’s crust has been used to generate power for more than a century. Engineers gather hot water or steam that bubbles near the surface and use it to spin turbines that create electricity. Most of those close-to-the surface areas have been exploited. The new frontier is places with hot rocks, but no cracks in the rocks or water to deliver the steam.

To tap that heat – and grow geothermal energy from a tiny niche into an important source of green energy – engineers are working on a new technology called Enhanced Geothermal Systems.

“To build geothermal in a big way beyond where it is now requires new technology, and that is where EGS comes in,” says Steve Hickman, a research geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif.

Wells are drilled deep into the rock and water is pumped in, creating tiny fractures in the rock, a process known as hydroshearing.

Cold water is pumped down production wells into the reservoir, and the steam is drawn out.

Hydroshearing is similar to the process known as hydraulic fracturing, used to free natural gas from shale formations. But fracking uses chemical-laden fluids, and creates huge fractures. Pumping fracking wastewater deep underground for disposal is suspected of leading to recent earthquakes in Arkansas and Ohio.

Fears persist that cracking rock deep underground through hydroshearing can also lead to damaging quakes. EGS has other problems. It is hard to create a reservoir big enough to run a commercial power plant.

Progress has been slow. Two small plants are online in France and Germany. A third in downtown Basel, Switzerland, was shut down over earthquake complaints. A project in Australia has had drilling problems.

A new international protocol is coming out at the end of this month that urges EGS developers to keep projects out of urban areas, the so-called “sanity test,” said Ernie Majer, a seismologist with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. It also urges developers to be upfront with local residents so they know exactly what is going on.

AltaRock hopes to demonstrate a new technology for creating bigger reservoirs that is based on the plastic polymers used to make biodegradable cups.

It worked in existing geothermal fields. The Newberry project will show if it works in a brand new EGS field, and in a different kind of geology, volcanic rock, said Colin Williams, a USGS geophysicist also in Menlo Park.

The U.S. Department of Energy has given the project $21.5 million. That has been matched by private investors, among them Google with $6.3 million.

Majer said the danger of a major quake at Newbery is low. The area is a kind of seismic dead zone, with no significant faults. It is far enough from population centers to make property damage unlikely. And layers of volcanic ash built up over millennia dampen any shaking.

The Department of Energy will be keeping a close eye on the project, and any significant quakes would shut it down at least temporarily, Majer said. The agency is also monitoring EGS projects at existing geothermal fields in California, Nevada and Idaho.

“That’s the $64,000 question,” Majer said. “What’s the biggest earthquake we can have from induced seismicity that the public can worry about.”

Geologists believe Newberry Volcano was once one of the tallest peaks in the Cascades, reaching an elevation of 10,000 feet and a diameter of 20 miles. It blew its top before the last Ice Age, leaving a caldera studded with towering lava flows, two lakes, and 400 cinder cones, some 400 feet tall.

Although the volcano has not erupted in 1,300 years, hot rocks close to the surface drew exploratory wells in the 1980s.

Over 21 days, AltaRock will pour 800 gallons of water per minute into the 10,600-foot test well, already drilled, for a total of 24 million gallons. According to plan, the cold water cracks the rock. Tiny plastic particles pumped down the well seal off the cracks. Then more cold water goes in, bypassing the first tier, and cracking the rock deeper in the well. That tier is sealed, and cold water cracks a third section. Later, the plastic melts away.

Seismic sensors produce detailed maps of the fracturing, expected to produce a reservoir of cracks starting about 6,000 feet below the surface, and extending to 11,000 feet. It would be about 3,300 feet in diameter.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management released an environmental assessment of the Newberry project last month that does not foresee any problems that would stop it. The agency is taking public comments before making a final decision in coming months.

No power plant is proposed, but one could be operating in about 10 years, said Doug Perry, president and CEO of Davenport Newberry.

EGS is attractive because it vastly expands the potential for geothermal power, which, unlike wind and solar, produces power around the clock in any weather.

Natural geothermal resources account for about 0.3% of U.S. electricity production, but a 2007 Massachusetts Institute of Technology report projected EGS could bump that to 10% within 50 years, at prices competitive with fossil fuels.

Few people expect that kind of timetable now. Electricity prices have fallen sharply because of cheap natural gas and weak demand brought about by the Great Recession and state efficiency programs.

But the resource is vast. A 2008 USGS assessment found EGS throughout the West, where hot rocks are closer to the surface than in the East, has the potential to produce half the country’s electricity.

“The important question we need to answer now,” said Williams, the USGS geophysicist who compiled the assessment, “is how geothermal fits into the renewable energy picture, and how EGS fits. How much it is going to cost, and how much is available.”

The Energy Department will provide $18 million for 32 advanced geothermal research projects, it announced Wednesday.

The department will provide $10 million for 12 projects focused on enhanced geothermal systems – the process of using hydrofracturing techniques or other methods to create deep underground reservoirs in rock heated by the earth. The department also announced $4 million in funding to develop advanced liquid technology for capturing heat from  rock to generate electricity as well as collecting valuable minerals like lithium from the geothermal brine brought to the surface.

“Investments in leading-edge geothermal technologies are diversifying our nation’s energy portfolio today and could help power our low-carbon future tomorrow,” said Doug Hollett, director of the department’s Geothermal Technologies Office. “The projects announced today aim to spur the development of cost-competitive geothermal energy and help provide U.S. manufacturers with the critical materials they need to build clean energy technologies right here in the United States.”

The department is also providing $4 million to map the locations where heat and rock conditions provide the most economic potential for geothermal development.

The funding follows the department’s creation of a laboratory to study geothermal fracking techniques and a push for improved fracking technology. The recent efforts to improve geothermal fracking are not unprecedented — former Energy Secreatary Steven Chu announced $338 million in Recovery Act funding for advance geothermal research in 2009.

Hard times are now bedeviling geothermal energy projects that risk triggering earthquakes as they delve miles deep into the Earth to tap clean and virtually limitless energy.

One such enhanced geothermal system, as they are known, caused a magnitude 3.4 quake in Basel, Switzerland, in 2006. A case in court against the head of the firm behind the work, Markus Häring of Geothermal Explorer, started yesterday on charges of property damage.

Meanwhile, a company running a federally funded enhanced geothermal system in California, AltaRock Energy, declared Dec. 11 it was abandoning the project, just one day after Switzerland permanently shut down the Basel system.

An extraordinary amount of heat is trapped underground, as erupting volcanoes show. Geothermal energy uses this heat to generate electricity and warm up buildings and roads.

“There is a virtually unlimited source of power just below your feet,” said Domenico Giardini, director of the Swiss Seismological Service in Zurich.

Conventional geothermal energy taps into energy near the surface. Enhanced geothermal systems, on the other hand, drill more than a mile down to access hot dry rock or magma, and pressurized fluid is pumped in to generate steam that can drive turbines. Scientists note the technology remains a promising source of alternative energy, but caution that its risks need more research and open discussion so that people and authorities don’t overreact.

“The energy is there — we just have to be smarter about getting it,” Giardini said.

These systems could lead to a 40-fold increase over present geothermal power generating capacity, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. An expert panel that convened at MIT in 2006 estimated the setups could provide up to 100,000 megawatts of electricity in the United States by 2050, or some 10 percent of the current national capacity.

Risk of quakes

The drawback of enhanced geothermal systems is the fact that they can trigger earthquakes. The pressurized water forced into the rock generates micro-earthquakes. It can also interact with existing deep faults, potentially causing larger temblors.

That is precisely what happened in Basel. The city has a history of earthquakes — in 1356, the city was severely damaged by a magnitude 6.7 quake, the largest ever recorded in central Europe, Giardini noted in a commentary that will be published in the Dec. 17 issue of the journal Nature.

“Basel was probably one of the worst places one could have started from,” Giardini said. “Enhanced geothermal systems in the future probably should not focus on cities with a past of devastating earthquakes.”

Giardini noted the Swiss Seismological Service had not seen what it would have considered adequate seismic risk analysis for the project.

“There wasn’t an expert assessment of how much the seismicity induced by the project would connect with the natural seismicity under Basel,” he explained. Moreover, although insurance covered any damage covered by large-scale collapses, “it didn’t account for little things like cracks in the plaster, which you have to call in painters for. If you call them in for 10,000 buildings, that costs a lot of money.”

Future directions

A number of other enhanced geothermal systems are active in Europe, some of which have been linked with earthquakes.

At two megawatts, the European Hot Dry Rock geothermal energy project in France will be the largest commercial enhanced geothermal system in operation. It was linked with magnitude 2.9 activity, but was adapted to reduce quake risk, and is scheduled to begin generating electricity in January. The work there is carried out in a more rural area without a known history of large earthquakes.

“My personal feeling is that enhanced geothermal systems will remain successful if they do not go directly under cities and if there is good dialogue with the public when it comes to assessing risks,” Giardini said. “We’re used to living with risks with energy systems — dams can break, and oil and gas can contribute to global warming. There is certainly a future for enhanced geothermal systems — it’s just a matter of getting the energy out in a safe way.”

Engineers at the Tyr drilling rig in Krafla’s snow-covered caldera hope to use a supercritical-water source two miles underground to produce 10 times as much geothermal electricity as a normal well.

It’s spring in Iceland, and three feet of snow covers the ground. The sky is gray and the temperature hovers just below freezing, yet Gudmundur Omar Fridleifsson is wearing only a windbreaker. Icelanders say they can spot the tourists because they wear too many clothes, but Fridleifsson seems particularly impervious. He’s out here every few days to check on the Tyr geothermal drilling rig, the largest in Iceland. The rig’s engines are barely audible over the cold wind, and the sole sign of activity is the slow dance of a crane as it grabs another 30-foot segment of steel pipe, attaches it to the top of the drill shaft, and slides it into the well.

Beneath the calm landscape, though, Fridleifsson and his crew of geologists, engineers and roughnecks are attempting the Manhattan Project of geothermal energy. The two-mile-deep hole they’ve drilled into Krafla, an active volcanic crater, is twice as deep as any geothermal well in the world. It’s the keystone in an effort to extract “supercritical” water, stuff so hot and under so much pressure that it exists somewhere between liquid and steam. If they can tame this fluid — if it doesn’t blow up their drill or dissolve the well’s steel lining — and turn it into electricity, it could yield a tenfold increase in the amount of power Iceland can wrest from the land.

Iceland’s geological evolution makes it especially well suited to harvesting geothermal energy. The island is basically one big volcano, formed over millions of years as molten rock bubbled up from the seafloor. The porous rock under its treeless plains sponges up hundreds of inches of rain every year and heats it belowground. Using this energy is simply a matter of digging a well, drawing the hot fluid to the surface, and sticking a power plant on top. Then, as power plants go, it’s business as usual: Steam spins a turbine that drives a generator, and electricity comes out the other end. More than 50 countries use geothermal power; pretty much anywhere magma and water are within a few miles of the surface is fair game. Iceland ranks 14th in the world for geothermal resources but is the highest per-capita producer of geothermal power. It’s committed to getting clean power out of the ground.

And commitment is what the rocky country needs right now. Last fall, Iceland entered a deep economic recession following a financial meltdown. Now, Iceland’s economy is down to fishing, metals and its clean, limitless supply of geothermal energy. It’s betting heavily on that energy, hoping to someday offload excess electricity to Europe through undersea cables, and Fridleifsson’s project is the all-in wager of the game. Many countries dabble in green energy — a solar plant here, a wind farm there — as they try to wean themselves off oil and coal. Iceland, on the other hand, has been making zero-emissions power a reality since the oil shock of the 1970s, when its progressive inhabitants realized that their dependence on imported energy was an economic vulnerability. Fridleifsson’s project, once just a scientific experiment, is the most recent expression of that ethos. If the gamble pays off, it could not only catapult Iceland out of debt but revolutionize renewable-energy efforts around the world.

The process has been methodically slow, but after nearly a decade and $22 million, the Iceland Deep Drilling Project should hit supercritical water next month. Fridleifsson has already weathered one failed attempt, in 2005, when a well collapsed during a routine flow test. And so, close as he is, he’s modest about his chances; when pressed, he admits to being “cautiously optimistic” about the current attempt. The project’s risk assessor gives it a 50-50 shot at succeeding. Fridleifsson doesn’t mention that if it works, a plant built around this well could deliver as much power as a small nuclear plant and become the global model for geothermal projects. And he certainly doesn’t mention (as oilmen, solar engineers and wind farmers so often say of their work, but Fridleifsson actually deserves to of his) that it could rearrange the future of energy.

A Modest Proposal
Iceland turns geothermal energy into electricity in two ways: Venting 600°F steam from a mile underground through a turbine, and a more energetic method that pulls 390° water from deep wells and heats surface water, making steam to drive turbines. Harnessing a natural supply of supercritical water — water that’s three times as hot and under enormous pressure — and turning it into electricity would be like switching from diesel to jet fuel. “If we succeed, we expect to increase power output by 5 to 10 times

,” Fridleifsson says.

To appreciate the benefits of free supercritical water, it helps to understand that most coal plants and nuclear power plants make supercritical water before generating electricity. The plants transfer heat energy — produced by burning coal or by the radioactive decay of isotopes — to water in a pressurized tank to bring it to a supercritical state. The process allows the water to maintain the high-energy intermolecular hydrogen bonds of a liquid, yet flow through pipes with near-zero resistance like a gas. It then runs through heat exchangers to create even more steam, which drives turbines to make electricity.

The IDDP well will dip two and a half miles belowground into a pocket of water heated to 1,100° by a bubble of magma. Water normally exists as steam at this temperature, but the immense pressure of the rock above holds the water in a near-liquid state. Once the water squirts to the surface, it will retain nearly all the energy that heated and compressed it. It is virtually certain that engineers will have to redesign existing heat exchangers to handle the water’s heat and potentially corrosive chemistry, but a plant running on naturally occurring supercritical water could churn out up to 500 megawatts, on par with a small nuclear reactor and half of what a large coal plant produces. Unlike these, though, the IDDP’s zero-emissions power source will last as long as the Earth’s core continues to heat rainwater.

Iceland’s geothermal efforts are currently operating at 20 percent capacity. If it exploited the island’s full reserves in only the conventional way, it could produce 20 terawatt-hours of electricity per year — about the same as three nuclear reactors. Tap into other supercritical reserves, or drill deeper into existing wells, and Iceland’s electric output could be five times that of the U.S., the world’s largest producer of geothermal electricity; Iceland is only the size of Kentucky.
In 2000, Fridleifsson recruited Wilfred Elders, a professor emeritus of geology at the University of California at Riverside, from retirement to co-lead the IDDP. Geological studies revealed that supercritical water does indeed flow under Iceland, and the six-mile-wide Krafla caldera was the place to go after it. They realized that all they have to do is tap the stuff — and hope that it doesn’t destroy the drilling equipment in the process.

Iceland has been running on geothermal power since the turn of the 20th century. Geothermal provides four terawatt-hours of electricity to the island a year, fulfilling about 25 percent of the country’s consumption, in addition to nearly 90 percent of its heat and hot water. (The U.S. has an estimated 400 terawatt-hours in geothermal resources but produces just 14.8 terawatt-hours a year, which amounts to only 0.38 percent of its overall electricity consumption.) Iceland’s international expertise on geothermal power, however, came with a steep learning curve. “We know better than anyone else how many things can go wrong,” says Bjarni Palsson, the IDDP’s head drilling engineer.
And with such a volatile fluid, a lot can go wrong. “Worst case, we have a blowout, and an uncontrolled flow of fluid blows the whole rig off,” says engineering geologist Sebastian Homuth, who conducted the risk assessment of the project. The IDDP’s stop valve is strong enough to prevent an explosion from trashing the rig, but a blowout could make reopening the well difficult.

It’s also likely that hydrochloric acid potentially present at these depths will make the water as caustic as battery acid. Engineers plan to strengthen the well with a steel lining, but “there is a good chance that this fluid is so corrosive that it will melt the steel within hours,” Homuth says. As long as the fluid shooting up the well remains in steam form, as the engineers hope it will, the hydrogen and chlorine ions it carries cannot form hydrochloric acid. Unfortunately, no one will know either way until the fluid races to the surface. A more mundane failure is also possible — the drill could simply miss the supercritical water, or hit impenetrable magma, forcing Fridleifsson to abandon this site and drill elsewhere.

The team members have already drilled two miles, but their sensory gear can’t withstand the hellish temperatures of the volcanic rock it will soon encounter, so they will drill the final 3,000 feet blind. The Tyr drilling rig works around the clock, grinding out 300 feet of rock per day, stopping every so often to take uncontaminated samples of the exotic rock. Elders and his team of mudloggers examine these rocks as they emerge from the well, searching for pyroxene-hornfels facies, the distinctive metamorphic rocks that indicate that the drill has hit its target. Regardless of the outcome at Krafla, the group will drill wells into two supercritical reservoirs on the west coast. Then, once they understand the supercritical fluid, they’ll start figuring out how to turn it into electricity. “We’re probably a dozen years away from a pilot plant,” Elders says. “I might not live to see it.”

But Iceland is the first country forced to bet everything on green energy, and its combination of desperation and expertise means it could finally make geothermal a viable alternative to oil and gas. As other nations run out of fossil fuels, they will face the same impetus. But you won’t hear that from Fridleifsson. Perhaps it takes his kind of patience and modesty to make geothermal work. Fridleifsson insists that Krafla is just like hundreds of geothermal wells that he has drilled over the years. “There’s no magic in this,” he says. “It’s just a natural process.”
